so thats why they need a valve adjustment every ~10k miles. Over time, the valve beats itself deeper into the seat and then the clearance between the bucket and lobe becomes 0, thus the valve is not sealing completely. So you put a smaller shim underneath the bucket bring the clearance back into spec. With cars everything is way bigger so it might not be as sensitive to valve adjustments as bikes are.
